SEVENTEEN

An hour later, Stone was already sick of all the questions.

“Okay.” Deputy Cade Valentine looked down at the information he had scribbled on his notepad. “Let’s go over the course of events one more time.”

“Why?” Stone asked.

“Because I need to make sure I got it straight.”

“If you don’t have it straight after I’ve already gone over it three times, I’m not sure a fourth is going to make any difference.”

The deputy glanced up from his notes, a red flush seeping across his youthful face to match the red hair under his hat. “Hey, buster,” he said, “I’m in charge here, not you. Given the circumstances, I would expect a little more cooperation out of you.”

“I did cooperate,” Stone replied. “Three times.” He sighed. “Listen, Cade—”

The young officer cut him off. “Not Cade. Deputy Valentine. This is an official police investigation, not a social call. I’d appreciate if you’d address me properly.”

Great, Stone thought. A quick-tempered rookie with a gun and a badge and an inflated sense of self-importance.

“Sorry…Deputy. But like I was trying to say, it’s getting late and I’d like to get a little shut-eye before morning.”

Deputy Valentine stared at him. “Really? After what just went down? You killed four men, for god’s sake! How can you sleep after that?”

“On my stomach, preferably with a flat pillow.”

“Smartass? That’s what I get from you, preacher?”

Stone shrugged. “I’m tired and getting cranky. Brings out the best in me.”

They were sitting at the bar in his basement because it was still warm down here, unlike the rest of the house. Upstairs he could hear the tromping of feet as various emergency personnel went about their business of collecting evidence and body-bagging corpses. A medic had offered to clean up his cuts from the flying glass, but Stone waved him off.

Outside, the night would be a kaleidoscopic mixture of red and blue lights. At least they had turned off their sirens when they got here. The banshee wails had been loud enough to wake the dead.

“I gotta say,” said Valentine, “you look pretty cool, calm, and collected for a guy who just sent four men to hell. Most people would be sitting there shaking like a leaf with a piss-stain on the front of their pants.”

“I can piss myself, if it’ll make you feel better.”

The deputy ignored him and studied his notes again.

“Listen,” Stone said, “is there any chance we can get Sheriff Camden over here?”

Valentine looked up and smiled smugly. “Negative. You have to deal with me. Sheriff’s tied up at another crime scene.”

“Something bigger than this?”

“Suicide,” the deputy replied. “County coroner killed himself tonight.”

Dammit! Stone felt guilt stab through him like a dull knife. He should have done more to help Nugent instead of being so judgmental. The poor bastard actually went through with it.

“So,” Valentine continued, “like I said, you have to deal with me.”

Stone relented, letting go of his stubbornness and relaying once again what had gone down here tonight. He took his time to make sure the deputy got all the details he needed.
